Well, they say March is mad, and this month is definitely one for the books.

Not only have we one show from The Royal New Zealand Ballet with Tower Tutus on tour but three shows. One on Thursday evening and two on Friday for the schools.
The Christchurch Earthquake Concert With a strong line up of local artists this concert has a country theme with some fantastic talent including; Teisha Seymour, previous Junior Gold Guitar Winner The Bradley Williams backing band, Louise Stringer David Harraway, winner of the NZ Yodeling section of Gold Guitar Casey Kennett plus others.
The Fortune Theatre tour to Oamaru with The Wonder of Sex staring actors Phil Grieve (LORD OF THE RINGS, KING KONG) and Keith Adams. And the famous Party Girls are in town for one night only. Community events this month include The Waitaki Sports Awards, The Race Relations Speech Contest, The Waitaki multicultural Concert and a few conferences thrown in the mix. Due to the Christchurch Earthquake the South Island Leg of the Micheal Jackson Tour has been postponed. This includes the intended performance at the Oamaru Opera House on March 5th 2011.

We appreciate the inconvenience postponements of shows create but also acknowledge this is trivial compared to what many of our friends, relatives and industry partners are currently facing in Christchurch at this time.

TicketDirect Oamaru will we offering full refunds for the Micheal Jackson History performance or ticket holders can keep their tickets and transfer them to the later date.

Showtime Australia who is the promoter for this event is based in Queensland and has been working tirelessly to piece together information about Christchurch, its theatres and infrastructure whilst also being respectful that the priority for those in Christchurch right now is about the rescue and safety of people. At this time new dates have not been confirmed, an announcement will be made as soon as this information becomes available. We thank you in advance for your patience.

What a Start!!!

Wow! I am exhausted and the year has only just started. The OoH is kicking off 2011 with an explosion of events. Preceding a successful year in 2010 The Ooh is positive that 2011 will be bigger and better. It is already shaping up to be that way. The first of many conferences for 2011 booked is for The Australian and New Zealand Geomorphology Group. They are due to arrive around January the 3oth and stay for a week. Fantastic shows on the way in February including Will Martin and A Night of the Proms. 2011 is filling up with other shows including, Nick Jr’s Dora the explorer live, Tutus on Tour, Michael Jackson HIStory, Party Girls, Dirty Dusting, Steampunk and more.

On everyone's lips at the moment is Stan Walker, the secret was leaked last week with loads of people making enquiries. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 9am on Monaday January 24th. Stan was the winner of four categories at the 2010 NZ Music Awards, taking home
"Tuis" for International Achievement, Highest Selling NZ Single, NZ On Air Radio Airplay Record of the Year and the coveted People's Choice award. Stan will be bringing his band to NZ for the first time and is excited at the prospect
of playing in these fantastic theatres. 'It's going to be a blast' says Stan.

It has been a huge year this year with shows, events, conferences, meetings, seminars and even weddings at The Oamaru Opera House (OoH). There are many more great events booked in for 2011 and with just over a week to go until The OoH is closed over the Christmas break, things are still all go. The ticket office is busy selling tickets for shows on the way in 2011. They include Last night of the Proms, Nick Jr's Dora The Explorer, Michael Jackson HIStory, Tower tutus on Tour, Party Girls, Steampunk Fashion Show and Steampunk Gala Ball, and NZSO Back to Bach. So If you want to get someone a TicketDirect ticket for Christmas make sure you do so before midday on Christmas eve, The OoH will then re-open on January the 10th. Tower Tutus On Tour 2011

2011's TOWER Tutus on Tour is all about families. Featuring a new production of Pinocchio and a sparkling classical showpiece, it's the perfect ballet for young and old to enjoy together.

TOWER Tutus on Tour is our opportunity to share what we do with as many New Zealanders as possible. Every two years our company divides in half and one group heads south and the other north. Over the following six weeks, they're on the road performing in more than 40 towns and cities.

NZSO Soloists Back to Bach

The great flowering of music during the Baroque era inspired composers to seek sumptuous sounds and create melodies of pure delight. This concert offers a celebration of brilliance of their achievement.

Baroque composers particularly loved the oboe for it's melodic richness, Bach's D minor concerto for the instrument was written during his happy time with the court orchestra at Cothen. In the work now known as Air on a G String from the Suite No. 3, Bach created one of the most famous melodies of all time. For the Paris Opera, Rameau created music of luxurious opulence and dramatic excitement, and in his Volker Overture, Telemann draws inspiration from his insatiable curiosity for the melodies and dance music of different countries and folk traditions, here traversing Turkish, Swiss, Russian, Portuguese and French sources in a rich display of his vivacious worldly musical style.

Victorian Oamaru Passport Tour

Enjoy a guided tour along Harbour and Tyne Street, Victorian Oamaru and receive your own Victorian Oamaru Passport as a souvenir.
Roger Blackburn will take you on a journey through the history of the century old warehouses, and you can collect brass rubbings on the way and have your passport endorsed from the merchants in the area.
This is a great interactive tour for the whole family.

The Bush Cinderella

A jewel of a silent film from New Zealand's cinematic history accompanied by June Cameron on piano. No New Zealander Should Miss It!
A Triumph of Dominion Enterprise, Filled with the Familiar Sentiments, the Typical Humour, and the Glorious Scenery of God's Own Country.
Billed as New Zealand's first big modern drama The Bush Cinderella had its world premiere at the Strand Theatre, Auckland on Friday 24 August 1928. The Bush Cinderella was pioneer film maker Rudall Hayward's fourth feature and his last silent film. The plot involves the trials and tribulations of a poor family in the back blocks of New Zealand at the turn of the century.
Audiences of the 1920s were known to always respond to tried-and-true story lines, and, according to actor Tom McDermott, this one was no exception.
Local newspapers agreed with The Sun reporting "The Bush Cinderella is the most outstanding, in originality and theme and merit of any produced in New Zealand concluding that it could be sent abroad without a qualm."

Play and Soiree

A presentation by the Oamaru Repertory Society at their theatre in Itchen Street.
"Play and Soiree" - an amusing one act play, "Sheep Ahoy!", followed by a Soiree, a collection of theatrical gems and other frivolities.
The play Sheep Ahoy! by New Zealand playwright June Allen, centres around some sheep in the shearing shed, knitting and having the kind of conversation one would expect typical New Zealand sheep to have! The Soiree will be a mix of songs, ditties and poems befitting the Victorian/Edwardian era.
The Repertory theatre is situated in Itchen Street at the entrance to the Historic Precinct, the auditorium has comfortable seating and the society is always delighted to welcome patrons to the Green Room following a performance to meet the cast and have a drink and a chat.

Architectural Walk Oamaru

Conservation historian Helen Stead will take you for an enlightening walk through Harbour and Tyne Street pointing out the architectural beauties of these century - old warehouses. These warehouses were built on the boom of the meat and wheat industry during the 1870s, today these buildings have been converted to retail outlets. You can talk to some traditional retailers in this historic precinct, e.g. bookbinder, wool merchant and many others. .
This walking tour will interest and enlighten you with Helens vast knowledge of Oamaru's history and its stories of the people that lived here.

Whirimako Black

Whirimako Black is New Zealand's most acclaimed and prolific Maori language singer with six solo albums to her credit and further guest appearances on three other albums, all in the last six years.
In 2001 her first album Hinepukohurangi: Shrouded in the mist was independently released on Muscle Music and won the Best Maori Language Award at the 2001 NZ Music Awards.
In 2004 her third album Tangihaku became a finalist at the annual NZ Music Awards in 2004 and also won the maioha award at the 2004 APRA Silver Scroll awards and a Te Waka Toi Award for her contributions to contemporary Maori music.
In 2006 Whirimako Black received the New Zealand Order Of Merit for her services to Maori Music.
"Whirimako Black Sings" released in October 2007 featured a combination of standards performed in both Te Reo Maori and English and proved to be an instant hit with standing ovations at The Dreaming Festival in Australia, Nelson and Tauranga Jazz Festivals.
Her musical achievements include composing and singing the titles for the acclaimed Television New Zealand series, 'The New Zealand Wars', as well as composing with Hori Tait the initial title music for the Maori news programme, Te Karere. In 1991, she formed the female Maori band Tuahine Whakairo but left in 1993, to start a solo career.
Whirimako sings mostly in Te Reo Maori, uses traditional Maori musical forms and collaborates with traditional Taonga Puoro instruments.
Whirimako Black bears a striking traditional Maori female tattoo, or Ta Moko on her face, a cultural symbol of pride and beauty.
She was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2006 New Year Honours

The Great Trash n Treasure Garage Sale November 14th

Sellers are busy pulling trash and treasure out of the cupboard and out of the bottom drawer and getting ready for the "Great Trash 'n' Treasure Garage Sale" Sunday November 14th at The Oamaru Opera House.

One seller: Pauline Webber will have a whole range of crafts and retro clothing on sale, and along with her sister, will also have a whole range of Christmas crafts too. “It will be a great day, and we’re really looking forward to it. It’s a fantastic lead up to the Oamaru Victorian Heritage celebrations. I just love it!” .

Other trash n treasure include bric a brac, jewellery, scarves and household items.

Stalls will be spread throughout the Oamaru Opera House and promises to be a treasure trove for the bargain hunter.

Registrations will close on Monday the 8th of November so be quick to secure your site.

The sale, in which anyone who has pre-registered can set up a stall, is one of the lead-up events to the Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations and will spread throughout the Opera House. The Great Trash and Treasure Garage Sale will be held Sunday the 14th and is open to the public to grab themselves a bargain from 9am till 3pm.

The Really Authentic Gilbert and Sullivan Performance Trust (RAGSPT) is presenting the entire G&S repertoire in chronological order over the 11-year period 2002-2012. In November, the eleventh opera, The Gondoliers, is scheduled for performance with an exciting cast, both in Dunedin and – exceptionally - in Oamaru as well.

This joyously sunny work, set in Venice, satirises republican egalitarianism and tells the strange and romantic story of two sturdy Republicans called upon jointly to assume the responsibilities of Monarchy. But which gondolier is really the king? And which boy is married to which girl? A comic Spanish Ducal family, the Plaza-Toros, and a mournful Grand Inquisitor do everything they can to complicate the plot.

In The Gondoliers there is a greater proportion of music to dialogue than in most of the other Savoy operas. Both author and composer spent more time working on this opera than they had on their earlier works and they paid rare tributes to one other's work after the premiere. A case of author and composer acting, for once, "in perfect unity".

A strong cast of some of Dunedin's finest performers together with a couple of guest principals from further afield will bring The Gondoliers to life under the direction of English professional stage director, Alan Spencer, back for his fourth production for the RAGSPT.

A rock band from St Kevin’s College was the crowd favourite at the South Canterbury Smokefreerockquest in Timaru on Saturday night. The Hazard, comprising Year 13 students Oliver Hailes on guitar, Tom Lord on bass guitar, and Wade Guthrie on drums, has made it into the next stage of the nationwide contest by picking up the most text votes to win the Smokefree People’s Choice award.

OoH Now Selling Rugby Tickets

Ticketdirect and The Oamaru Opera House are now selling tickets to all Crusaders games at The AMI Stadium and all Highlanders games at Carisbrook. This Saturday will be a stunner.

The Crusaders’ opening Rebel Sport Super 14 match of 2010 is at AMI Stadium on Saturday, February 13, and there is a special curtain-raiser in store so make sure you get to the game early!

Kicking things off at 5.30pm is the BNZ Crusaders Legends v the Highlanders Legends.

The Crusaders team features such players as Reuben Thorne, Richard Loe, Graeme Bachop and Caleb Ralph.

All have played massive parts for the Crusaders over the years and on Saturday they get to pull the boots on for the Red and Blacks against a Highlanders Legends team featuring the likes of John Leslie, Jamie Joseph and Taine Randell.

The match is sponsored by BNZ, who are kindly paying the air fares for the players not based in Christchurch.

Former Crusader Tabai Matson, Canterbury’s current assistant coach, has been one of the main organisers of the Legends match.

He said: “The boys have been training hard for the past month. Collectively they have managed to lose 100kg! It has motivated a lot of people to get back in shape to get on the big stage again.”

The main game between the Crusaders and Highlanders kicks off at 7.35pm.

So this is Christmas...

What a year it has been, with the official opening in March and now 35 shows later the Oamaru Opera House is closing for the Christmas break. Everyone has worked extremely hard from the executive team, staff and volunteers to make it such a successful year. Enjoy your break you deserve it.

To all patrons, thank-you for supporting the Oamaru Opera House in 2009. We look forward to seeing you next year for a great line-up of shows, events and meetings.

Love it or hate it, everyone remembers the plastic round window sporting the Oamaru Borough Council emblem on the Opera House pre-restoration.

When the Opera House was restored the decision was made to replace the plastic emblem with the original nine pane window design that we have now. However it was also recognised that although not very old the plastic window held social importance and should be retained.

The plastic window has been in storage and has now been mounted inside the atrium stairwell of the new south wing addition to the Opera House. Other old signage is to be installed in this area and didactic panels are being prepared to give information about the signs. As the window was mounted crocked in it original position we thought it appropriate and a little humorous to do the same in its new position.

Music Hall Selling Fast

Music Hall is selling fast but there are still tickets available.

A box office hit in 2006, The Star and Garter Players return to make the Opera House an old time Music Hall again. Audience sing-alongs, 30 authentic songs, plus a fruity melodrama, "The Devil Within". With a guest appearance by Dame Kate Harcourt, " My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen!" takes you back to the time when black-hearted villains (Boo!! Hiss!!) roamed the stage, threatening innocent maidens with a fate worse than death until, of course, they were finally foiled. (Bravo!! Hurrah!!). If merriment, music and a little bit of tearstained pathos is your idea of a jolly good show, then you should certainly book early for this jolly good show.

On Tuesday 1 December a very special production plays at the Opera House. Fresh from an acclaimed Sydney season, ‘mozart & ME’ is the life-story of Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart’s librettist.

This is a wonderful opportunity (opera-tunity?!) to see some real Opera in our Opera House. But this is more than just Opera and Lorenzo Da Ponte was much more than just a librettist!!! – he was a Jew who converted to Christianity, became a priest, was defrocked, played the violin in a Venetian brothel and who befriended Casanova! Da Ponte moved from country to country around Europe (often just in the nick of time..) and wrote the librettos for Mozart's Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro and Cosi Fan Tutte. This hilarious script will have you laughing aloud as well as enjoying the sumptuous music. Acclaimed Bass Damian Whiteley performs an amazing catalogue of Mozart/Da Ponte hits amongst many others (including Salieri, Martini, Martin y Soler, Paisiello). Nominated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as ‘Outstanding Newcomer’ Whiteley ,described by Australia’s Limelight Magazine as ‘Australia’s answer to Teddy Tahu Rhodes’, is rapidly carving out a stellar international career.Writer and director of ‘mozart and ME’, Melvyn Morrow has been acclaimed for his work with Australian Opera on updated lyrics for Gilbert and Sullivan performances at the Sydney Opera House, Mel also scripted the ABC simulcasts of the Sutherland-Horne-Bonynge Gala, A Masked Ball, and the ABC-Australian Opera Tribute to Dame Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge. More recently he has achieved huge success as co-author of the Australian musical smash-hits ‘SHOUT!’ and ‘Dusty’ (to be staged in Dunedin in 2010).

The Topp Twins, A Topp Night!

Well, they were a sell out and a show which everyone enjoyed. It was 100 years of the top twins and most likely their last New Zealand Tour. The show was fantastic and everyone enjoyed themselves. With a little bit of audience interaction the locals got in on the act. I wonder if Richard will ever be the same again? Shelly and Phil had the night off ushering and were in fine form playing Camp Mother and Camp Leaders games. It was a Topp night.

"Swan Lake" What a Show!!!

Swan Lake presented by The Imperial Russian Ballet.

All the seats were booked, and it was the first time we have had a full house in The Whitestone Contracting Auditorium since The OOH re-opened.

What a night! Everyone arrived nice and early to have a drink before the show. The theatre doors closed at 8 and the lights went out. The music started and the curtains opened. The night was filled with magic in air as the dancers tip-toed around the stage. It was a performance that left everyone speechless. It was the first time many people in Oamaru had seen a ballet in their life, I will guarantee it wont be their last.

Jade String Quartet

Formed in 2003, Jade String Quartet is NZ's hottest new instrumental ensemble, with its members all players in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Jade has already established itself as a musical force to be reckoned with, through many brilliant live concerts, and have recorded a Live CD which highlights the groups ability to passionately perform works of great magnitude and depth. Eclectic violinist Miranda Adams ( from Vivo and Bravura fame), is well-known throughout NZ as an exciting live performer of dazzling virtuosity, and Associate Concertmaster with APO. She is joined by fellow Kiwi William Hanfling (co-violin), Sub-Principal player in the APO. Robert Ashworth, prizewinning violist from Canada and Principal viola of the APO is in much demand as a solo, chamber and orchestral player throughout NZ. German born cellist Claudia Price brings her International experience from London and Berlin to further enhance the group's sound.

Jade’s repertoire ranges from early Baroque to present day, including several NZ commissions and quirky arrangements of modern music.

72nd Oamaru Performing Arts Festival

From the early hour of the morning till late at night hundreds of local and regional performers have been competing.

This is the first entry into the Oamaru Opera House blog.

Why have a blog? there are heaps of people who are always asking about the Opera House, what's coming up? how can I get involved and so on and so forth. So here at the Opera House we thought the best way (other than you surfing our great website) is to start a blog.

So who's blogging?? well lets see, blog posts will be from Richard- yep that's me- the Director or Eleanor the Opera House Administrator or one of our many Encore Staff who you see doing all the important stuff when you visit the venue. I'm thinking also Alice our fabo new barista is going to be on here a bit too.

What is going to be on our blog??? we aim to have a blog that is casual and friendly (just like all of us here at the Ooh!). Nothing too formal and we will try to keep the boring bits to a minimum. We will post promotions, special offers, reviews, pics and various other ramblings on here so you can keep up to date and learn about the goings on at the Ooh
